Winter Open 2011 Results
On February 12th, the Joplin Chess Club held its 1st tournament of the year. Luckily the weather cooperated, mostly, with warmer temperatures melting most of the snow and ice on the roads.
While turnout was lower than hoped, we were still able to host 21 players. I want to thank everyone for taking the time, and for many players a long drive, to join us for a day of chess. We were privileged to have IM Goran Vojinovic and CM Ron Luther along with players from all over MO, players from KS, and some new players from the Joplin area.
Other than a couple of minor issues, melting show causing a bothersome dripping (it was reminiscent of the ticking of analog clocks, just a little more annoying), some late afternoon sun (though it did make for some good pictures), and a minor time delay on starting the rounds, everything seemed to go well. I look forward to seeing everyone again in future events.
In the Open the standings for the top 3 places were:
1. Goran Vojinovic 4.0
2. Ron Luther 3.0
3. (three way tie, in tie break order) with a score of 2.0
- Joel Stebbins
- James Larkin Smith
- Tony Dutiel
In the U1600 section the standings for the top 2 places were:
1. Stan Horton 4.0
2. Devon Stahl 3.0
A full cross table for the tournament can by found at the USCF site.
The excellent pictures are courtesy of Laura Smith (link to originals and additional photos). I didn’t include all of them here, so follow the link to view some additional ones, along with some very good player shots. My pictures were too dark without the flash, so I want to give double thanks to Laura for taking pictures and allowing us to use hers on the site.
