This is a postion reached in one of my games at the Carthage Chess Open. While it is a won game for White, or at least I’m pretty sure it is, I think there are some very good foundational concepts that can be found by playing it out. You have to be careful as you can quickly lose the advantage if you make less than optimal moves. I had a couple places where that almost happened to me in the actual game.

White to play: FEN “8/7p/1k2p3/3p1p2/1K1P4/4P3/2P2PP1/8 w – - 1 47″

This was a position reached while playing a casual game on a Nintendo DS, Chess Master The Art of Learning. I ended up winning the position, as white, but I know I didn’t do it efficiently and the player personality I was playing made some questionable moves. I don’t think it really is a won position, though I am going to continue studying it to see how it would pan out with best play. Click the image for a a larger view.

Black to move: FEN “1k6/6pp/5p2/8/8/6PP/4KP2/8 b – - 0 43″

I’m going to post some endgames that I come across that I think look like they would be good endgame studies. Generally speaking these studies will come from games that I have played or have seen played that I thought would either be good to study and on some I will possibly include some of the resulting play if that is educational also.

Since I’m not an expert on endgame play I probably will limit my comments and won’t try to present the best line, though I might include the best line that a chess engine came up with. I’m using these endgames to try and get better at playing similar endgames and thought you might also enjoy them. One benefit, I feel, is that these come from actual games played and show the importance of learning endgame techniques.

I’ll probably include a separate category so they are easier to find but haven’t made up my mind quite yet. Also, if you have any games/positions you think would be good then please send me the FEN code for it, the full game in text or PGN format and the move number you feel is the most important or picture representation of the position. If you want me to include other game information, such as players/dates/etc then let me know. At this point I’m probably not going to include them in the positions I post.

Anyway, hope you like them.
