Luckily the weather cooperated, mostly, with warmer temperatures melting most of the snow and ice on the roads.

While turnout was lower than hoped, we were still able to host 21 players. I want to thank everyone for taking the time, and for many players a long drive, to join us for a day of chess. We were privileged to have IM Goran Vojinovic and CM Ron Luther along with players from all over MO, players from KS, and some new players from the Joplin area.

Other than a couple of minor issues, melting show causing a bothersome dripping (it was reminiscent of the ticking of analog clocks, just a little more annoying), some late afternoon sun (though it did make for some good pictures), and a minor time delay on starting the rounds, everything seemed to go well.  I look forward to seeing everyone again in future events.

In the Open the standings for the top 3 places were:

1. Goran Vojinovic 4.0
2. Ron Luther 3.0
3. (three way tie, in tie break order) with a score of 2.0

  • Joel Stebbins
  • James Larkin Smith
  • Tony Dutiel

In the U1600 section the standings for the top 2 places were:

1. Stan Horton 4.0
2. Devon Stahl 3.0

Turnout was better than expected as 8 players from the Springfield club attended, leaving one player that had to sit out, due to the format. Parings were in a Scheveningen format (each player on one team plays each player on the other).

Games started out fast and furious, many of  the first round games being completed well under an hour.  Overall, the event went smoothly, with only a couple of minor hiccups, quickly resolved.  47  games later (2 games won by forfeit as one Springfield player had to leave after his 5th game), the score was Joplin with 28 points, Springfield 21.

Joel Stebbins continued his recent good performances, finishing with a perfect 7.0 score, pulling in 1st place overall. Springfield members, James Long and Edil Karabiev, tied for 2nd with 6.0 points each. The full cross table is available at the USCF site (link).

I want to thank Joe Brozovich and the Springfield Park Board Chess Club (link) for inviting us up to play. I hope there will be many more in the future.

Joplin Chess club members James Smith placed 1st in the 7-8 division and Jonah Smith placed 1st in the K-6 division.

Overall the tournament seemed to be well run and the location and hospitality were excellent. Many thanks to everyone involved for a great event.
