Carthage Chess Open Update
Yesterday the Joplin Chess Club hosted the Carthage Chess Open. Turnout was less than expected, at 14 participants, but that didn’t diminish the fun. Most of the players were from the Sunday and Tuesday Joplin chess groups, though we did have a member from the Crowder club in Neosho and a player from near Kansas City.
There were two sections for prizes, with the reserve section being those players rated under 1100 USCF. There was one exception to that, with one unrated player competing in the upper section due to his playing strength at the club.
In the 1100 and above section there was a three-way tie for 1st place, with 4 points each, between Allen Bishop, James Larkin and Daniel Todd. After tie-breaks and a play-off blitz round for 2nd and 3rd the trophy standings were:
- Daniel Todd
- James Smith
- Allen Bishop
In the under 1100 reserve section first place went to Martin Stahl, with 3 points, and there was a three-way tie for 2nd place, with 2 points each, between Justin Holland, David King and Jonah Smith. After tie-breaks and a play-off blitz round for 3rd place the trophy standings were:
- Martin Stahl
- Justin Holland
- Jonah Smith
It was great fun again, with great competition. Many thanks to both Bart Gibbons and Laura Smith (and everyone else that helped) for their all their great work and thanks to all the players for coming. If anyone wants to see the USCF ladder results they are already posted on the USCF site. Also, if anyone has any pictures to post send them to me and I’ll get them added below.
great tournament bart.
